This is a fountain (I can't think of a good equivalent word in English) at a temple in Kyoto called Ryoanji (a Zazen temple). It is in the shape of a coin. Usually when approaching a temple, one will use the water and ladle to ritually cleanse oneself.

1) Holding the ladle in the right hand, pour water on the left hand.
2) Holding the ladle in the left hand, pour water on the right hand.
3) Cup the right hand and pour some water in. Either drink it or swish it and spit it out on the ground.
4) Use the remaining water to cleanse the handle of the ladle and replace it.
You are now clean! :D
